Today was our first class in the To The Woods STEMmersion. We started by reading a quote by Henry Thoreau that can be seen on the right side of the page here and talking about what it means to "live deliberately" the way he used it, and our goals for this class. We played a game to get to know each other, a few other activities, then walked to a pond near the school for an activity.

Once we were at the pond we sat in silence for ten minutes to experienced nature around us for the first time in the class. During this we wrote down what we felt, heard, and saw, then compared to other people. A lot of the things I had written down were the same as others like seeing ripples across the water or hearing trees blowing in the wind, but some were different. One of these things was a bird that flew from behind us, dropped to the water and glid to the other side. Even though everyone had been in the same place, the way each of us experience nature was, and always will be, different from anyone else.
